Abaca parol ornament from Albay, Bicol.
The parol is one of the most recognizable Filipino Christmas decorations. They're often hung outside of homes or in windows. The parol was historically used to light the way to church during the Christmas season for the early dawn masses o Simbang Gabi, leading up to the midnight mass on Christmas Eve (Misa de Gallo). Its name comes from the Spanish word for lantern or "farol."
